Policies regarding the use of students’ Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) are different for general students and those who are student-athletes.

Student-athletes: Guidance and policy

Student-athletes

For guidance on student-athletes and NIL, please contact the NIL Office within the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics and consult UW’s policy on NIL.

Products or promotions that refer to current student-athletes enrolled at the university will not be approved unless the product or promotion is in compliance with NCAA regulations.

NIL guidance: For current UW students who are not student-athletes

With the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2021 Alston decision, college student-athletes are now free to manage their name, image, and likeness for commercial purposes. This decision does not impact non-student-athletes, who have always been free to manage their name, image, and likeness, including in a commercial manner.
